Poultry Feed

Poultry feed built for low FCR

Vital Feeds makes poultry feed in Pakistan at its own mill in Arifwala, Punjab: broiler starter, grower and finisher, plus chick starter, grower and layer feed, in crumbs and pellets. Each ration is balanced for its stage: uniform weight gain in broilers, steady egg production in layers.

Why feed quality decides your profit

In commercial poultry, feed is the largest single cost of production. A small change in feed conversion ratio (FCR) — the kilograms of feed needed per kilogram of live weight — moves your margin more than almost any other decision on the farm.

Three things drive FCR, and all three depend on the mill:

  • Balanced nutrition. Energy, protein and amino acids have to match the bird's stage. Too little and growth stalls; too much and you pay for nutrients the bird cannot use.
  • Consistent raw material. Maize and soybean meal vary batch to batch. Without testing, the ration on paper is not the ration in the bag.
  • Physical feed quality. Poor pellets break into fines. Birds eat selectively, intake drops, and feed is wasted on the floor. See how to judge pellets and dust in a bag.

Stage-by-stage guidance

The table below shows the typical structure of a broiler programme in Pakistani conditions. It is a general guide — the right programme depends on your breed, housing and target weight.

Choosing the right poultry feed

Farmers looking for chicken feed in Pakistan usually need one of three things: broiler feed for meat birds, layer feed for eggs, or chick starter for young pullets. So the first question is not which brand, but which bird and which stage. A broiler and a laying hen are doing completely different jobs. A broiler is built to put on weight quickly and is finished in weeks; a layer has to stay healthy and productive for more than a year. Feeding one the other's ration costs money either way.

  • Broiler farms: use the three-stage programme — starter crumbs, then grower and finisher pellets. Our broiler feed page explains stage timing and feeding practice, and the broiler feed calculator works out how many bags of each stage a flock needs.
  • Layer farms: use chick starter and grower during rearing, then layer feed from the point of lay. See layer feed and our layer feeding schedule by age.
  • Mixed or small units: keep separate, clearly marked stock for each flock so rations do not get mixed up in the store.

How to use poultry feed on the farm

  1. Start with water. Birds drink roughly twice what they eat. Check drinker flow and cleanliness before blaming the feed.
  2. Change stages gradually. Blend the old and new feed over two to three days so intake does not dip.
  3. Store it properly. Keep bags off the floor and away from walls in a dry, ventilated store, and use the oldest stock first. Damp feed grows mould and birds refuse it.
  4. Watch the flock, not the calendar. Weigh a sample of birds every week and compare with your target. Our broiler weight chart shows typical targets.

How we keep every bag the same

As one of the poultry feed manufacturers in Pakistan that lab-tests raw materials before milling, we keep the same recipe for each stage from bag to bag, so the ration on paper is the ration in the bag. At the Arifwala mill, every incoming lot of maize and soybean meal is checked before it enters production, so a poor lot can be rejected before it becomes feed. Rations are balanced for each species and stage, then ground, mixed and pelleted for uniform particle size. Finished feed is batch-coded, so any bag can be traced back to the batch it was produced in. The full process is on our quality and lab testing and milling process pages.
