If you need wanda for buffalo or milking cows, ours is a balanced, high-energy concentrate, milled by Vital Feeds in Arifwala, Punjab, and fed alongside green fodder to support milk yield, butterfat and body condition through lactation. A common working rule is about 1 kg for every 2 to 2.5 litres of milk.
Dairy vanda (wanda) is a high-energy concentrate fed alongside green fodder to milking buffalo and cows. It supplies the energy, protein and minerals needed to support milk yield and butterfat without the animal losing body condition. Vital Feeds mills its vanda in Arifwala, Punjab, Pakistan.
ڈیری ونڈا: دودھ دینے والی بھینس اور گائے کے لیے، عارف والا مل سے۔
When farmers buy wanda for milk, they are buying a concentrate, not a replacement for fodder. Vanda's job is to supply the energy, protein and minerals that green fodder cannot deliver in the volume an animal can physically eat — especially in early lactation, when milk output is highest and appetite has not yet caught up.
The amount of concentrate an animal needs is not fixed. It follows her milk.
| Stage | What is happening | Feeding priority |
|---|---|---|
| Early lactation | Milk peaks before appetite does | Highest concentrate need; protect body condition |
| Mid lactation | Intake catches up, yield begins to fall | Match concentrate to actual yield |
| Late lactation | Yield declining, animal rebuilding condition | Reduce concentrate; avoid over-fattening |
| Dry period | No milk, calf growing fast | Low concentrate, good minerals, prepare for calving |
Look at the animal, not just the milk can: a steady yield without sharp weekly drops, body condition holding through early lactation, firm and consistent dung, an animal that is chewing cud while resting, and shiny coat condition. If dung becomes loose and bubbly, or cud chewing stops, reduce concentrate and increase long fibre.
Watch milk fat as well as litres: if fat falls after you raise the vanda, the animal may need more fibre, not more concentrate.
Dose concentrate by production. A common working rule is roughly 1 kg of vanda for every 2 to 2.5 litres of milk, on top of good green fodder. Wanda for milking cows follows the same rule as for buffalo: feed by the litre, at the 2.5-litre end of that range for a cow and nearer 2 litres for a buffalo, whose milk carries more fat. A high yielder gets more, a low yielder less, and an animal losing condition in early lactation may need extra support. Keep a simple daily milk notebook for each animal — it shows within weeks whether the extra concentrate is paying for itself.
Be patient with the result. No feed doubles milk in a week; fed by yield, with plenty of clean water and good fodder, the change shows on the milk record within two to three weeks. Our guide on how to increase buffalo milk yield covers water, fodder and heat stress as well.
Keep bags off the floor and away from walls in a dry, ventilated store, and use the oldest stock first. Feed that smells musty or sour should not go in front of a milking animal — contact the mill with the batch code instead.
